The Best Sandals Resort: A Guide to Help You Decide

By Chrissy Samples · October 14, 2026

Aerial view of the overwater bungalows and beach at Sandals Grande St. Lucian

“What’s the best Sandals resort?” It’s a question I love, because the honest answer is a question back: the best for whom? Sandals has 17 resorts on 8 islands, and they aren’t interchangeable. One has a beach so long you’ll lose track of where the resort ends. One is a quiet bluff where peacocks wander through afternoon tea. One has a heart-shaped pool at the center of its suites. Match the resort to the two of you and you’ll be planning your return before the flight home.

I’m Chrissy Samples, a vacation concierge and Silver Elite Certified Sandals Specialist. I’ve walked these beaches, eaten the food, and noticed the little things you only learn by being there, and that’s what I bring to every trip I plan. This guide shares the resorts my couples book most and who each one suits, so you can start to picture yours. If you’d rather skip straight to the Sandals and Beaches trips I plan, that page is the short version.

Key Takeaways

  • No single best Sandals. It depends on how you travel.
  • Top 3 islands for a milestone trip: Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia.
  • Best beaches: Royal Barbados, Grande Antigua, Grande St. Lucian.
  • Best value: Grande Antigua, Grenada, Regency La Toc.
  • Privacy and romance: Royal Plantation.
  • Fresh, new look: Royal Curaçao and Saint Vincent.
  • Active groups and pickleball: South Coast, reopening November 2026.
  • Families go to Beaches: Negril for little ones, Turks for teens.
  • Count the inclusions and Sandals costs less than it looks.

What’s the Best Sandals Resort Overall?

There isn’t one that’s best for everyone, and that’s the fun part. My top 3 islands for a milestone trip are Barbados, Antigua, and Saint Lucia. The couples I send there are usually celebrating a romantic milestone, like a honeymoon, an anniversary, or a celebration of love for any reason, which is the heart of the romance travel I plan. Here’s every Sandals resort, island by island:

  • Jamaica: Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Royal Plantation, Sandals Ochi, Sandals South Coast, Sandals Negril, Sandals Montego Bay, and Sandals Caribbean Cay
  • Saint Lucia: Sandals Grande St. Lucian, Sandals Regency La Toc, and Sandals Halcyon Beach
  • Barbados: Sandals Royal Barbados and Sandals Barbados
  • Antigua: Sandals Grande Antigua
  • Grenada: Sandals Grenada
  • Curaçao: Sandals Royal Curaçao
  • Saint Vincent: Sandals Saint Vincent
  • The Bahamas: Sandals Royal Bahamian

Here’s the quick version, by what you care about most:

If you want…Then choose…
The best beachSandals Royal Barbados, Sandals Grande Antigua, or Sandals Grande St. Lucian
The bluest water, with the familyBeaches Turks and Caicos, then Beaches Negril
The best value for what you paySandals Grande Antigua, Sandals Grenada, or Sandals Regency La Toc
Privacy, quiet, and romanceSandals Royal Plantation
A fresh, new resort lookSandals Royal Curaçao or Sandals Saint Vincent
Luxury with a modern feel, and golfSandals Dunn’s River or Sandals Royal Curaçao
Scenery and a lush, tropical islandSandals Grande St. Lucian (Saint Lucia)
A less-traveled, untouched islandSandals Grenada or Sandals Saint Vincent
Places to go out at nightSandals Royal Barbados, Sandals Grande Antigua, or Sandals Dunn’s River
Standout food and nighttime entertainmentSandals Royal Curaçao
An active group trip or a pickleball crewSandals South Coast (reopening November 2026)
A first Sandals trip on a careful budgetSandals Ochi, matched carefully
Little ones, or a first trip out of the countryBeaches Negril
Teens, or a short ride after you landBeaches Turks and Caicos

The rest of this guide is the “why” behind each of those, island by island. The room category, the side of the resort, and the time of year matter just as much, and that’s the part we work out together.

How Do We Find the Right Sandals for Us?

There’s no blanket rule with Sandals, no “couples like you always go here.” When I meet with clients, I do start with a few general questions like these, and you two can ask yourselves the same ones right now:

  • Beach or pool? Some Sandals resorts have a long, swimmable beach. Others have a small cove and spectacular pools. You’ll be happiest knowing which one you are.
  • Quiet or lively? Do you want to be tucked away with a book, or do you want music at the swim-up bar and a party at night?
  • How far are you willing to ride after you land? Some resorts are about 15 minutes from the airport. Others are close to 2 hours, and the scenery is the trade.
  • Modern or classic? A brand new build feels very different from a resort with history and gardens, and both have fans.
  • Stay put or explore? Some islands reward leaving the resort. Some resorts are so complete you never want to.
  • Golf, diving, or neither? Several resorts include green fees, and certified divers get to dive at all of them.

Your answers usually narrow 17 resorts to 2 or 3. Then I ask the questions that are about you two specifically, the ones no list can cover, and that’s where the real expertise comes in.

Which Sandals Resort in Jamaica Is Right for Us?

Jamaica has more Sandals resorts than any other island, and they’re wildly different from each other, so this is where matching matters most. These are the Jamaica resorts my couples book most right now.

Sandals Dunn’s River

Rebuilt and reopened in 2023, Sandals Dunn’s River feels modern, boutique, and nature-inspired. The pools flow into each other like a river, the Skypool suites sit right on the beach, and the rooftop Rondoval villas let you picnic under the stars. Green fees at the nearby course are included, and you’re welcome to spend a day at Sandals Ochi down the road, too. When you want a night out, Ocho Rios is close by.

Right for: honeymooners who don’t mind spending, golf groups, workout groups, and anyone who wants luxury.

Not the one if: you’re on a lower budget, or you want a sprawling mega-resort.

Sandals Royal Plantation

If you want privacy, quiet, romance, and over-the-top service in a small, intimate setting, this is your resort. It’s an all-butler resort set on a bluff above a secluded cove, with afternoon tea in the garden and peacocks that treat the place like their own. It’s a little more classic than sleek, so it suits couples who don’t mind a touch of rustic. You can play at Sandals Ochi with free transport if you want a livelier day.

View from the bluff down to the beach and pink umbrellas at Sandals Royal Plantation

Right for: the two of you, if you want to be left alone together, celebrate something quietly, and be spoiled by a butler team.

Not the one if: you’re super active, you have mobility concerns (it’s built on a bluff), or you need ultra-modern rooms and the latest tech.

Sandals Ochi

Ochi is a resort I match carefully. It’s a huge property with two personalities: a lively beach club on one side and quiet Butler Villas spread through a 100-acre garden on the other, plus a hidden speakeasy to find. It prices very kindly, the villa setup is unique for a group of friends or a company retreat, and for a first all-inclusive trip it’s a friendly place to start. If a long, beautiful beach or a true luxury stay is high on your list, I’ll point you to another Jamaica Sandals before we book.

Right for: young couples traveling as a group, girlfriends’ or guys’ getaways, first-time travelers, and anyone who wants Sandals on a careful budget.

Not the one if: you’re picturing a long, beautiful beach or the most polished, top-tier stay.

Sandals South Coast

I can’t wait to see South Coast when it reopens on November 18, 2026. After Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, Sandals took the chance to do far more than a quick update of the rooms: the resort is being completely refurbished, with new venues on the way. Even before, it was the resort for people who want to stay put. It’s surrounded by a 500-acre nature reserve on Jamaica’s quiet south coast, with overwater bungalows, a village of round Rondoval villas with their own pools, and waterskiing right off the sand. The trade is the drive, about an hour and a quarter from Montego Bay.

Overwater bungalows at Sandals South Coast

Right for: active groups, pickleball crews, birthday groups, and you two if you’d rather settle in and never leave the resort. It’s a great fit for group trips once it reopens.

Not the one if: you want to be close to the airport, or you get motion sick on a winding drive.

More Sandals in Jamaica

Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Caribbean Cay (formerly Sandals Royal Caribbean) are closed for a full refresh and reopen on December 18, 2026. Once they’re back, I expect both to become top sellers, with all the updates they’re adding and their spot close to the airport. Montego Bay is the original Sandals, on what Sandals calls Jamaica’s largest secluded white-sand beach, and Caribbean Cay has its own private offshore island and overwater villas. And Sandals Negril is the upbeat one on Seven Mile Beach, famous for its sunsets.

Which Sandals in Saint Lucia Should We Choose?

Saint Lucia is a lush, mountainous, dramatic island, and one of my top 3. Sandals has 3 resorts here, Sandals Grande St. Lucian, Sandals Regency La Toc, and Sandals Halcyon Beach, and you can hop between them with free transfers, so you’re choosing a home base and getting the other two along with it.

Sandals Grande St. Lucian

Grande St. Lucian is a honeymooner’s dream. The beachfront Grande Rondoval Butler Suites come with a private pool, so it’s like having your own private residence steps from a perfect beach, with a butler for everything else. If you want the feel of Fiji without the flight, the overwater bungalows are in high demand, with glass floor panels steps from your bed so you can watch the marine life below. Green fees at the 18-hole Cap Estate course are included from all 3 Saint Lucia resorts, and with the exchange you can spend a day at La Toc for its scenic bluffs or at Halcyon Beach for its intimate cove.

Right for: honeymooners, water sports lovers and active guests, golfers, and foodies.

Not the one if: you want a small, boutique feel or a restful, quiet vacation, or you’d rather not do a longer transfer from the airport.

Is Sandals Royal Barbados Right for Us?

Sandals Royal Barbados is where I send couples who want a little of everything. The beach is long and expansive, one of the best in the Sandals family, and it’s known for windsurfing, a unique extra for Sandals guests. The resort is playful and upscale at the same time, with a rooftop infinity pool and a bowling alley with a craft beer bar, and every room is a suite. Sandals Barbados next door is yours to enjoy too. It’s 15 minutes from the airport, and St. Lawrence Gap is right there when you want a night out.

Right for: weddings, luxury, groups, foodies, beach lovers, and the two of you if you want privacy but also places to go out and have fun.

Not the one if: you want a small, intimate resort, or a beach with Bahamas-like calm waters.

Is Sandals Grande Antigua the Best Value?

For what you pay, yes, and Antigua is another of my top 3 islands. Sandals Grande Antigua sits on Dickenson Bay, which Sandals calls Antigua’s longest beach, and the layout gives you real variety: thatched Rondoval cottages right on the sand, and Mediterranean-style Butler Villas with their own plunge pools. The landscaping and gardens are beautiful. It’s the only Sandals on Antigua, and it’s the most inclusive of the all-inclusive resorts on the island, so the value isn’t only resort-wide, it’s island-wide.

Right for: romance, variety in both layout and food, beautiful gardens, a pretty beach, couples who want the option of seclusion or a lively night, and anyone who wants to explore an island that feels easy and comfortable.

Not the one if: you need the most modern rooms and the freshest decor, or you’d rather not have local vendors stopping by while you’re on the beach.

Is Sandals Grenada Worth the Trip?

If you want a Caribbean island that still feels untouched, yes. Sandals Grenada sits on Pink Gin Beach, a calm stretch framed by cliffs and coves, and it has a boutique, hideaway feel. The Skypool suites have their own infinity plunge pools, and there’s a fire-pit lounge set right in the pool. Certified divers get up to 2 tanks a day here, with an underwater sculpture park nearby. It’s one of my best values, right behind Antigua.

Right for: you two if you want a less-traveled, secluded, romantic island and a boutique resort.

Not the one if: you have trouble with hills, you’ve got your heart set on a pristine white-sand beach, or you need lots of activity and entertainment options.

Who Is Sandals Royal Curaçao For?

If a fresh, new resort look is your top priority, Royal Curaçao is the one. It opened as a Sandals in 2022 on a bay on the Spanish Water. The two-level infinity pool seems to blur into the horizon, and the Kurason suites wrap around a heart-shaped pool. For the full splurge, the Awa Seaside Bungalows are oceanside butler villas with your own private infinity-edge pool. Kurason and Awa guests also get use of their own MINI Cooper and the island dine-out program, so you can taste true island cuisine. The food and the nighttime entertainment on the resort are real standouts, too. Divers love it, golfers have the Old Quarry course next door, where Sandals now has a golf program for its guests (green fees are extra), and the island’s history and culture are worth your time off the resort.

Pool cabanas with an ocean view at Sandals Royal Curaçao

Right for: couples who love a fresh, modern resort, excellent food and unique dining, outstanding nighttime entertainment, amazing pools, golf, diving, and a bit of history and culture.

Not the one if: you want a pristine, open, swimmable beach (this one is sheltered by a pier, with snorkeling around it), you don’t want a long flight from the US, or you’re on a tight budget.

Is Sandals Saint Vincent Worth a Look?

If you want a fresh, new look on an island most people haven’t visited yet, yes. Sandals Saint Vincent opened in 2024 on a protected cove at Buccament Bay, and it still feels like a hidden gem. Its Vincy Overwater Villas are two stories, with glass floor sections, a roof deck, and steps straight into the cove, and they’re the only overwater villas on the island. It’s a natural pick for the two of you if you’d rather explore somewhere less traveled.

Sandals or Beaches?

Sandals is for couples only. Beaches is the family side of the same company, with the same all-inclusive philosophy plus kids’ camps, waterparks, and Sesame Street. Beaches has 2 resorts, and they’re a natural fit for family trips to the Caribbean. Both now offer family villas that feel like a residence within the resort, each with butler service. For a multigenerational trip, they’re the stress-free option: all-inclusive, with a luxury feel and a touch of privacy so you can reconnect as a family, away from everyday busyness.

Beaches Negril

Negril is the laid-back one, on the widest stretch of Seven Mile Beach, with a waterpark right on the sand and the kind of easy pace that suits a first trip out of the country together.

Pirate-themed waterslides and pool at Beaches Negril

Right for: families with small children, and families traveling internationally for the first time.

Not the one if: you have teens who need constant action.

Beaches Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos is the big one: themed villages on Grace Bay with a huge waterpark, a teen disco, and a Kids Camp that, like Negril’s, is a certified autism center. The transfer is only 15 to 20 minutes, which matters more than people think. Turks and Caicos is a premium destination, and Beaches is one of very few all-inclusives on the island, so it prices higher than the others.

Infinity pool with a turtle sculpture at Beaches Turks and Caicos

Right for: families with older kids and teens, family weddings and groups, and families with a child with special needs, when long drives or complicated travel days are hard.

Not the one if: you’re honeymooners or want adults only, or you’re watching the budget closely.

Is Sandals Really Worth the Price?

This is something I go over with my couples, because people have a misconception that Sandals is just automatically unaffordable. Put it side by side with the inclusions and the picture changes. Sandals sets itself apart from its competitors by being the most inclusive all-inclusive. Certified divers dive for free. Motorized and non-motorized water sports are included, which plainly speaking means you can take a free snorkel trip or glass-bottom boat ride, take out a kayak or a Hobie cat, and even waterski at the resorts that offer it.

Top-shelf premium liquors are included, and that’s resort-wide, not just for guests in certain rooms or levels. All the food is included, lobster and all, and the only kind of upcharge you’ll see is something like a tomahawk steak at the steakhouse. The house wines are Mondavi at no charge, and if you want to trade up, you can order from the Chairman’s Wine List and pay extra.

And there’s no tipping at Sandals or Beaches, unless you have a butler team, use a butler for something like a private dinner or a cabana for the day, or visit the spa for a treatment. Essentially you can leave a Sandals resort at checkout with a zero dollar bill. The difference is with Sandals you pay the price up front, versus paying a lower price initially and then being nickel and dimed during your stay.

On a funnier note, most people believe that the people at Sandals all look like the people in the commercials. I can testify that this is in no way true!

Common Questions About Choosing a Sandals Resort

Which Sandals resort is the best?

The one that matches how you travel. My top 3 islands for a couple celebrating a milestone are Barbados, Antigua, and Saint Lucia, and the sections above explain who each resort suits. More of the questions I hear most are on my travel FAQs page.

Which Sandals has the best beach?

Sandals Royal Barbados, Grande Antigua, and Grande St. Lucian. Among the Beaches resorts, Turks and Caicos for the color of the water, then Negril.

Which Sandals is best for a honeymoon?

Royal Plantation if you want privacy above everything, or Dunn’s River if you want luxury and don’t mind spending. Royal Barbados or Grande Antigua if you want a great beach with places to go out. Grenada if you want a secluded, romantic hideaway, or Grande St. Lucian if you want two other resorts to play at and the feel of Hawaii in the Caribbean. If a wedding is part of the plan, start with how to plan a destination wedding.

What’s the difference between Sandals and Beaches?

Sandals is couples only. Beaches welcomes families and adds kids’ camps, waterparks, and teen spaces, with the same all-inclusive approach. I cover both Beaches resorts above.

What does a Certified Sandals Specialist actually do for me?

I match you to the right resort and room category, handle the booking and every detail around it, and I’m the person you call before, during, and after the trip if anything needs adjusting. I have strong relationships with each resort’s team and management, and you’ll want me on your side for the best possible experience at a Sandals or Beaches resort. The Sandals and Beaches page has more on how that works.
